Lets apply this logic to other crimes and see how far it gets us.
Solution to murderers: Teach people not to kill.
Solution for robbers: Teach people not to steal.
The problem is you still have to take measures to protect yourself. I won’t park in a bad area of town, leaving my car unlocked, and then complain about theft culture when it gets stolen.
This is why rape culture is bullshit. There are decent people, and then there are despicable pieces of shit who rape people. That’s it. Now matter how much you “teach” people not to rape, there will always be rapists.
You have to protect yourself to some degree, and I’m not talking about carrying a gun. If you go to a party with people you don’t know and get wasted, and something bad happens to you, that is partially your fault. By no means am I excusing the person or people who did it to you, but you have to be a responsible adult, understand the danger, and adjust your life to it. There will always be bad people out there… This is called reality (I know tumblr hates that word)
So please, for your sake, protect yourselves.
Well, teach them anyway.
Using your own logic, compare how society deals with robbery and murder. Let me rephrase it. Compare it to how the police and judiciary system deal with it, how your neighbors, coworkers, school peers, will react.
If someone robs your house or kill a member of your family, your neighbors won’t think less of you, won’t blame it on you for not having a better security system. Police officers won’t just file a report and not follow with an actual proper investigation, even though you ID’d the criminal. And if he gets arrested, the chance that there is actually going to be a trial wont be ridiculously lower than for other crimes. In the trial, no one is going to point out how often you had people over at your place, or try to make less of your loss by implying you deserved it. The media wont dissect and expose your personal life, or say how “the life of these young men can be ruined” for being convicted.
And if it happens a second time, people wont think you are an attention seeker.
Women are protecting themselves already, they always had. But despite their best efforts, it’s not always enough. And when it does happen, we find out how many people should have learned that RAPPING IS WRONG. But we only ever heard that BEING RAPPED IS WRONG, which places all responsibility on women.
WE NEED TO TEACH MEN NOT TO RAPE. Because THEY ARE THE COPS, JUDGES, HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS, LEGISLATORS that have the power to do something about it. Because AS LONG AS THEY BELIEVE THAT WOMEN SHOULD NOT BE RAPED, THEY WILL KEEP PUNISHING WOMEN FOR IT.
All this is just a reflex of what we really think, as a society, about who’s to blame when it comes to rape. And to change it, we have to change the mentality of those in power, who ultimately shape our behavior as a society.
So yes, teach men not to rape, because women are already trying not to be raped, and it’s just not working.
